What is chaat?
- Chaat is a popular Indian street food snack featuring a mixture of flavours and textures.
- There are different types of chaat including pani puri, bhel puri, aloo tikki chaat, papdi chaat and dahi puri. You can also enjoy fruit or vegetable chaat.
- Chaat is typically made with ingredients including boiled potatoes, chickpeas, tamarind chutney (imly), green mint chutney, yogurt as well as onions, tomatoes, coriander/cilantro and spices.
- The combination of ingredients bring a blend of flavour profiles such as sweet, tangy, sour and spice in every bite.
- You can make chaat with a variety of toppings and ingredients to suit your preferences.
Ingredients You'll Need
- Sweet potatoes: this recipe uses regular sweet potatoes. Cook, peel and chop sweet potato into chunks. This forms the base of the chaat which complements the nectarine. You can also use roasted sweet potatoes.
- Nectarines: Adds a juicy sweetness and slight tartness. Look for ripe nectarines.
- Chaat masala powder: Infuses the dish with tangy, spicy, and salty flavors.
- Pomegranate: To garnish, for colour, crunch and sweetness.
- Fresh coriander/cilantro: Brings a refreshing taste to the dish. Use fresh coriander/cilantro stem and leaves, finely chopped.
- Lemon juice: for a refreshing zesty tone that pairs well with the sweet potato.
How to Make Sweet Potato Chaat with Nectarines
- Prepare sweet potatoes: Cook sweet potato until tender using a microwave or in a pan. To cook in the microwave, thoroughly wash the sweet potatoes. Pierce with a fork and microwave for 5-7 minutes or until cooked. Allow to cool. Peel and chop the sweet potato into chunks and place into a bowl.
- Mix ingredients: Pour in the lemon juice, sprinkle with chaat masala and half of the chopped coriander/cilantro. Toss to mix well, the sweet potato will start to become soft and slightly mashed. This helps ensure the sweet potatoes absorb the tangy and spicy flavours, as a base for this chaat.
- Add nectarines: Fold in the chopped nectarine and combine gently.
- Garnish, serve and enjoy: Garnish with pomegranate seeds and fresh coriander. Enjoy immediately or chill in the refrigerator for a refreshing treat.
Substitutions
- Peach: If nectarines are unavailable, ripe peaches work well and offer a sweet taste.
- Purple sweet potato: For a twist, use purple sweet potatoes for a slightly less sweet flavor.
