What are the potential health benefits of sweet potatoes?
Sweet potatoes are rich in nutrients including vitamins A and C, potassium and fiber. They are also an excellent source of antioxidants, which help protect the body free radical damage, reducing the risk of chronic disease.
Sweet potatoes also have anti-inflammatory properties and potential health benefits including improving brain function.
Notes on Recipe Ingredients
- Sweet potatoes: use organic, where possible. Scrub and peel beforehand.
- Olive oil: I prefer using extra virgin olive oil (for added antioxidant properties). You only need a little oil for these sweet potato wedges.
- Garlic: minced garlic adds flavor to these sweet potato wedges
- Seasoning: including salt, pepper and lemon juice. I also recommend adding dried parsley, oregano and red chilli flakes/red pepper flakes for more flavor.
Equipment
Air fryer: The best air fryer to use is one which is wide with a crisper basket. Β I recommend theΒ Ninja Foodi wide air fryer.Β This airΒ fryerΒ has variable fan speed and comes with a crisper basket and an air fry setting which is temperature controlled. This is also wider so easier to cook in one batch (in a single layer).Β

Preparation
- Prepare the sweet potatoes. Start by washing and peeling the sweet potatoes. Using a sharp knife and chopping or cutting board, cut into wedges.
- Make seasoning mixture. In a large mixing bowl, combine olive oil, garlic, lemon juice and seasoning (salt, pepper and herbs).
How to make sweet potato wedges in the air fryer (step-by-step instructions)
- Coat sweet potato wedges with seasoning and oil. Add the sweet potatoes into the bowl (with seasoning). Toss with the mixture to evenly coat the sweet potato wedges. Preheat air fryer to 200Β°C/400Β°F. This helps evenly cook the sweet potato wedges.
- Air fry. Arrange the sweet potato wedges in a single layer onto a lined air fryer basket/tray. Avoid overcrowding or overlapping the wedges. Cook for 15 minutes, after every 5 minutes mix to help evenly cook the sweet potatoes. Depending on the size of your air fryer you may need to cook these in two batches.
- Once cooked, serve fresh and enjoy. You can check the sweet potato wedges are cooked by placing a fork through one. They should be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Once cooked, remove from air fryer (so they donβt become soggy) and place on a plate lined with a paper towel (kitchen towel). Serve immediately for the best taste and texture.
Tips for best results
- Serve fresh with your favorite dipping sauce: serve hot and fresh for the best taste and texture. You can serve these homemade wedges with dips including mayonnaise, ranch dressing, guacamole or blender salsa.
- Mix and match: for a spicier taste, add red chilli flakes/pepper flakes. You can garnish with fresh herbs including parsley, chives or cilantro/coriander. Ensure you use herbs and seasonings which are fresh (stored in an airtight container).
β - Crispiness: for extra crispy sweet potato wedges, you can add 1 teaspoon cornflour/cornstarch (optional) to the sweet potatoes (before air frying them).
- Line tray with parchment/baking paper (or a baking sheet): this will help stop the sweet potato wedges from sticking to tray (and make less mess too)! Ensure the parchment/baking paper you use is heat-resistant (designed for baking).
- Avoid overcrowding the air fryer tray: this helps keep them crispy and cook evenly as well as helping with air circulation.
Variations
Cheesy sweet potato wedges: for delicious air fryer cheesy sweet potato wedges, add a sprinkle of cheddar cheese or mozzarella cheese once cooked, air fry for another 30-60 seconds, or until cheese has melted.
Seasonings: substitute with your desired seasoning including Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder or paprika/ cayenne pepper/powder.
Fresh herbs: for a refreshing taste, garnish with fresh herbs including cilantro/coriander, chives or parsley.
How to serve
- Serve these seasoned sweet potato wedges as the perfect side dish to go with ratatouille, simple Italian spaghetti, garlic flatbread and soup!
- These sweet potato wedges also are a great and delicious side dish with sandwiches and burgers too.
- Serve this healthy side dish alongside more air fryer recipes including crispy jalepeΓ±o poppers, mushroom poppers or garlic breaded mushrooms! This also goes great with fresh homemade coleslaw and Mediterranean bruschetta - call it a fun feast and enjoy!
