Drinking fresh juice is a fantastic way to add nutritious and good food into your diet.

This is a healthier replacement for a soft drink!
What is passion fruit?
- Passion fruit is an exotic fruit from a flowering tropical vine (which grows in warmer climates).
- Passion fruit has a sweet, tropical and slightly tangy/tart taste.

Ingredients You Need to Make this Fresh Juice
- Oranges: use sweet, easy peeler oranges where possible, as you’ll need to peel the oranges before adding to the blender. Ensure orange slices have no seeds.
- Passion fruit: I recommend using ripe passion fruit for a sweeter taste (to tell if it is ripe it is slightly wrinkly but still firm to touch).
- Water (and ice): to help blend the drink. The water content in oranges varies so add less and adjust accordingly. I also recommend adding ice, as the blender motor warms up the drink – this avoids the need to store the juice in the fridge to cool it down!
- Optional - Carrot: this adds a lovely natural orange color in this drink (and extra nutrients). I recommend using a peeler to peel the carrots (this minimises wastage).
- Optional - Apples: this enhances the sweetness of the drink. you can use Gala or Braeburn apples for their sweeter taste with just a slight hint of tartness. For a sweet tasting juice, avoid green apples including ‘Granny apples’ and ‘Gravenstein’ apples as these have an intense tart taste with less sweetness. You don’t need to peel the skin, just cut and core the apple – this adds to the fibre content!
How to make orange and passion fruit juice (with carrot and apples)
- Add water, apples, oranges, passion fruit and carrot to the blender. Add half a cup of water to the blender followed by the sliced apples, peel oranges, passion fruit pulp and peeled carrot. Add one large cube of ice (or 2-3 ice cubes depending on size).
- Blitz into a smooth juice. Secure lid firmly onto blender and blitz using the juice setting on your blender, for 1 minute, or until juice is smooth. If required, add another ¼ cup of water to make up to 3 cups of juice – blitz for 20 seconds until mixed. Serve and enjoy!
Equipment
To make this fresh juice, all you need is a blender – I recommend Blendtec – this blender has a number of blending cycles and allows you to adjust blending.
Tips to Make the Perfect Glass of Fresh Juice
- Adjust the water – the water content varies in apples and oranges, therefore to ensure you do not add too much water, start with less water when blitzing the fruit and veg – you can always add the remaining water to make up to 3 glasses.
- Use a good blender – it is important to use a good functioning blender to blitz the fruit and veg into a smooth juice. I recommend using a blender (like Blendtec) which allows you to adjust blending options. This also has a scale which allows you to measure the number of cups of juice that you will have (and whether you need to add more water)
- Add ice – this will cool down the temperature of the juice (as the motor of the blender will warm up the drink)
- Use fresh ingredients – for best results, make sure to select the freshest ingredients. When selecting apples, ensure they are firm to touch with no soft spots. Ensure the oranges are also fresh with no seeds. If you notice seeds in the oranges, remove them before adding to the blender – this will prevent any bitterness from the seeds. Ensure the carrots are firm with no soft or brown spots – peel and rinse before use. When selecting passion fruit, ensure it is firm to touch and ripe (if it is slightly wrinkly that means it is ripe)
- Pause and shake if required – if you notice the fruit is not fully incorporating – or the fruit is not mixing – I recommend stopping the blender and gently shaking and then resuming – this helps to ensure the blade appropriately blitzes the fruit and veg to make a smooth, fresh juice.
- Prepare ingredients - Peel the oranges and carrot before adding and cut the apples into slices (to remove the core and seeds) before adding to the blender.
Variations
Mix and match ingredients as desired:
- Mango: add ½ cup fresh (or frozen) mango to make sweet orange, passion fruit and mango juice!
- Guava: replace orange with guava and lychee for a unique twist on classic passion fruit and guava juice!
How to serve this juice
- This refreshing homemade juice is the perfect drink with breakfast or as a standalone breakfast drink! For a wholesome and nutritious breakfast, serve with other healthy recipes including scrambled eggs and guacamole!
- This fresh drink can be served with Indian recipes including dhokla and crispy paneer fingers as well as Italian recipes including simple Italian spaghetti.
- Alternatively, you can enjoy this juice with snacks, appetizers and alongside healthy lunches and dinners! I recommend drinking fresh juice on an empty stomach (or with a meal) rather than after a meal, for maximu
m absorption and benefit.
