The Ultimate Snack
Today, I’m super excited to share a recipe that combines two of my all-time favorites: nachos and sweet potatoes.
If you’re like me and love the idea of indulging in nachos but are looking for a healthier alternative, these sweet potato nachos are your perfect match.
The sweet potato slices are crispy on the outside and soft and tender on the inside - topped with cheese, salsa and guacamole - and any other toppings you like!
They’re absolutely delicious, packed with flavor, and way more nutritious than your typical nacho platter. The ultimate snack!
Plus, they’re a crowd-pleaser for get-togethers, movie nights and football season! Grab your plate and let’s dig in!
Ingredients You’ll Need
To make these mouthwatering Sweet Potato Nachos, you’ll need:
- Sweet potatoes: Sweet potatoes serve as a healthier base for our nachos. These are peeled, sliced and coated before air frying to perfection. Not only do sweet potatoes bring a unique sweet and savory flavour, they are also packed with nutrients including beta-carotene, fiber, and vitamins A and C.
- Olive oil: I like to opt for extra virgin olive oil but you can also use regular olive oil if preferred. Olive oil helps the sweet potatoes cook in the air fryer, bringing a tender bite to each slice.
- Salt and pepper to taste: to enhance the natural sweetness of the sweet potatoes and add a balanced flavor.
- Cheddar cheese: grated or shredded cheddar cheese melts wonderfully, adding a creamy, tangy layer – that is essential for any good nacho dish.
- Guacamole (store-bought or homemade): Guacamole adds a creamy, fresh element that pairs perfectly with the crispy sweet potatoes and melted cheese. It’s also loaded with healthy fats from the avocado. To make homemade guacamole you'll need: avocado, red onion, cilantro/coriander, lemon juice (fresh or bottled) and salt
- Salsa (store-bought or homemade): I recommend making homemade pico de gallo/salsa for the best nachos! To make homemade pico de gallo/salsa you’ll need: plum tomatoes, garlic clove, green chilli, red onion, coriander/cilantro, salt and lemon juice (fresh or bottled).
Preparation Tips
While the sweet potato slices are cooking in the air fryer, prepare your toppings (if you are making homemade dips).
- To make the guacamole: Add avocado, chopped red onion, coriander, lemon juice, and salt into a medium bowl. Mash until smooth and mix to combine. Taste and adjust seasoning as desired.
- To make the pico de gallo/salsa: Add the tomatoes, garlic, green chili, red onion, coriander, salt, and lemon juice in a food processor. Pulse until semi-chunky consistency or for longer (for a smoother consistency). Taste and adjust seasoning as desired.
How to Make Sweet Potato Nachos
- Prepare the Sweet Potato Chips. Start by washing and thinly slicing your sweet potatoes. You can use a mandoline slicer to get even slices, or carefully slice the sweet potatoes using a sharp knife. Toss the slices in olive oil, salt, and pepper until well coated.
- Air Fry the Sweet Potatoes slices. Preheat your air fryer to 180°C (356°F). Spread the sweet potato slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Air fry for 7-8 minutes, or until the sweet potato slices are fully cooked, shaking the basket halfway through to ensure even cooking.
- Add the Cheese. Once the sweet potato slices are cooked, sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese evenly over them. Return the basket to the air fryer and cook for an additional 2-4 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Assemble the Nachos. Remove the sweet potato nachos from the air fryer and transfer them to a serving platter. Generously dollop guacamole and salsa over the top (as well as other toppings including sour cream).

Tips for the Perfect Sweet Potato Nachos
- Slice sweet potatoes evenly: Even slices ensure that the sweet potatoes cook uniformly.
- Don’t overcrowd: Make sure the sweet potato slices are in a single layer in the air fryer. Overcrowding can lead to uneven cooking.
- Keep an eye on the sweet potatoes: It is best to keep an eye on the sweet potato slices - depending on their thickness and size they may require slightly more time to cook. Also keep an eye on the nachos when melting the cheese. Air fryers can vary, so check frequently to avoid burning the cheese.
- Use parchment paper/baking paper: when air frying your sweet potatoes and adding cheese it helps to line the air fryer tray with parchment paper. This prevents any mess and helps you transfer the sweet potato nachos into a plate.
- Customize your toppings: Feel free to get creative with your toppings! Black beans, corn, jalapeños, or a drizzle of sour cream can take these nachos to the next level.
Serving tips
- These nachos are unique – in that they are more delicate than regular nachos, so I would recommend serving these as if they are a nacho bake.
- Serve using a large serving spoon – it may also help enjoying these with cutlery if preferred (like a bake).
- Enjoy with other appetizers including Jalapeño Poppers, Garlic Breaded Mushrooms and Mediterranean Bruschetta.
- These are also great with sandwiches including our Sourdough Grilled Cheese!
