Why this Recipe Works
- Easy, quick and simple to make - using a just handful of simple ingredients.
- Cozy and comforting - the wonderful blend of whole spices in this drink will bring comfort to your cup and the rest of your day!
- Versatile - you can adjust this drink as desired (see tips below), depending on the ingredients you have available.
Ingredients You'll Need
- Whole spices: including cloves, cinnamon stick, ginger and nutmeg. You can also substitute with ground spices if preferred (note these will be less potent).
- Tea Bags: use decaf or caffeinated black tea bags. Opt for organic tea bags if possible.
- Milk: for creaminess. Use dairy or non-dairy milk.
- Optional – cardamom and whole black peppercorns: these are optional to enhance the spice notes. Cardamom also brings a hint of floral notes into the tea. I recommend adding cardamom if you would prefer a fusion of masala chai and pumpkin spice, omit these spices if you prefer a classic pumpkin spice taste.
See recipe card for a full quantities.
Substitutions and Variations
- Pumpkin pie spice: If you don’t have whole spices, you can use pumpkin pie spice (pumpkin spice powder) as a convenient alternative. Add 2 teaspoons to the boiling water and brew for 3-4 minutes before adding the tea bags. Adjust pumpkin pie spice quantity according to your preference.
- Non-dairy milk: Substitute almond milk or coconut milk for a dairy-free version of this tea.
- Natural sweeteners: Add a little honey, maple syrup or fresh dates for a sweeter cup of tea.
- Spice chai latte or pumpkin chai: turn this into a spice chai latte or pumpkin chai by keeping the cardamom and black peppercorns along with other spices, and adding ½ cup of frothed milk.
- Vanilla: add ¼ teaspoon of fresh vanilla pods or ½ teaspoon vanilla extract for a warming vanilla flavor.

How to make Pumpkin Spice Tea
Step 1: Crush the spices. Using a pestle and mortar (or pestle alone), crush the cloves, cinnamon stick, ginger and nutmeg in a pan (as well as optional spices if desired).
Step 2: Boil the spices in water. Add water to the pan with the crushed spices. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and let it simmer for about 7-9 minutes to fully infuse the flavors.
Step 3: Add tea bags. Place the tea bags into the pan and let them brew for an additional 1-2 minutes.
Step 4: Add Milk and bring the mixture to a boil on high heat for another 3 minutes. Boiling the milk enhances the creaminess of the tea. Remove from heat, strain the tea into cups and enjoy fresh. For an extra touch of fall flavor, sprinkle a bit of extra cinnamon on top.
