- Matcha is a vibrant green powder and type of green tea originating in Asia.
- Matcha is made from green tea leaves that are ground into a fine powder.
- This powder, traditionally used in Japanese culture, is now used worldwide in snacks, beverages and desserts!
What does Matcha Taste Like?
- The process used to prepare matcha powder gives this ingredient its vibrant green color and unique taste – an earthy, slightly rich flavor with a hint of sweetness and bitter undertone.

Where to buy Matcha Green Tea Powder?
You can buy matcha green tea powder in some supermarkets and grocery stores (including Walmart, Holland & Barrett and Kmart). Online retailers, including amazon, also have a wide range of matcha green tea powder options available.
Different grades of Matcha
The different grades of matcha green tea powder include Premium Grade, Ceremonial Grade and Culinary Grade.
- Premium matcha and Ceremonial matcha are ideal for consumption as tea, in beverages, and as a cooking ingredient.
- Culinary matcha is specifically recommended as an ingredient for cooking, whether incorporated into recipes or blended into shakes and milk.
Health Benefits of Matcha
- Studies have shown matcha has a variety of potential health benefits including aiding weight loss, promoting heart health and protecting the liver.
- Matcha is rich in antioxidants, which help reduce inflammation and cell damage in the body.
- Matcha may also improve brain function and enhance attention and memory – it contains caffeine and a component called L-theanine, which adjusts the effects of caffeine to promote alertness and sustain energy levels (avoiding energy crashes that may occur after consuming caffeine).
- At the same time, consume matcha in moderation as it contains a high amount of caffeine and may not suit everyone.

What you need to make vanilla matcha latte
- Matcha Green Tea Powder: this powder has a vibrant green color. This powder gives this drink a unique and distinctive matcha tea flavor. I use Japanese Organic Matcha Green Tea powder (Premium grade) in this recipe as it is a high-quality matcha powder. If you are in the US (I recommend this organic matcha powder - high quality matcha with stronger flavor. For a milder flavor, Culinary grade matcha powder is often used, this is also cheaper than Ceremonial grade matcha powder). Using a higher quality product helps bring the best flavor to this drink.
- Pure vanilla extract (plus optional vanilla beans from pod): vanilla complements the flavor of matcha and brings a hint of vanilla taste to this drink. For an enhanced flavor, you can also add vanilla beans from ½ vanilla pod. For a simple matcha latte (without hint of vanilla), you can omit vanilla extract and vanilla beans.
- Hot water: used to help dissolve the matcha green tea powder into a shot of tea, before adding the milk
- Milk: you can use semi-skimmed (2%), whole milk or any milk of choice. This is steamed before adding to the matcha green tea shot for a frothy taste. For a vegan latte, substitute with plant-based milk (non-dairy milks) including almond milk, cashew milk, oat milk, soy milk or coconut milk. The type of milk used can alter the taste slightly.
- Optional - for a sweeter taste you can add natural refined sugar-free sweeteners including maple syrup, honey or dates (I prefer this option to using vanilla syrup).
How to Make matcha latte
- Sift matcha into a cup or bowl. In a large (wide) cup, jug or bowl, use a sieve to sift in the matcha powder.
- Add water. Add 2 tablespoons of hot water and whisk to combine. Ensure the matcha powder is fully dissolved in the water, giving you a dark green tea-like mixture.
- Steam the milk until hot and frothy. Using a milk frother or steam wand (if using a Nespresso/coffee machine), steam milk until hot/warm and frothy (maximum foam).
- Add hot milk. Pour the frothy hot milk over the matcha tea and whisk to combine. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Equipment
Whisk: To make this you will need a whisk to combine ingredients. You can use a regular small whisk or bamboo whisk (this is a traditional matcha whisk in Japanese tea ceremonies). If you prefer the traditional way of making this drink, you can find bamboo whisks from online retailers, including amazon.
Milk steamer/frother: You will also need a milk steamer or milk frother. You can use a machine with a milk steaming function (such as a Nespresso coffee machine with a steam wand). This will help the milk become hot and frothy for the matcha latte.
Tips to Make the perfect cup of vanilla matcha latte
- Sift the matcha powder: this helps to remove any lumps to ensure the matcha powder is fully combined with the warm water and milk.
- Use a wide cup/jug or small-medium bowl to make the drink: this helps you easily whisk the ingredients together so the matcha can dissolve, whilst also creating extra froth for a creamy and delightful drink!
- Steam the milk to maximum froth setting: this gives you a wonderful and creamy texture in the latte. I use the Nespresso steam wand to heat the milk and add extra foam. If you are using a milk frother which doesn’t heat the milk, warm the milk in a small saucepan (on low/medium heat) before frothing the milk.
- Serve immediately: for the best taste and texture – and maximum creaminess and smoothness!
- Variations: on hot summer days you can make iced matcha latte (or iced vanilla matcha latte)! For an iced version substitute ½ cup milk with ½ cup of ice cubes.
