Notes about Recipe Ingredients
- Tahini: tahini is a paste made from toasted and ground sesame seeds, contributing to the sesame notes in this chocolate spread. I recommend using tahini for its delicious, unique flavour. You can find regular tahini at grocery stores and supermarkets. Plus, tahini is rich in antioxidants and nutrients including protein, copper, healthy fats and fibre.
- Cacao powder: I recommend using organic raw cacao powder, for a rich, deep chocolate taste. Cacao powder is a healthier alternative to cocoa powder – raw cacao powder is made from unroasted fermented beans and is processed at a lower temperature (than cocoa powder). This results in richer, slightly bitter notes (resembling dark chocolate), whilst keeping more of its nutritional value. Cacao powder has many benefits including being a source of protein, magnesium, copper, zinc and antioxidants. You can substitute cacao powder for unsweetened cocoa powder however I highly recommend using cacao powder for its richer taste and nutritional value.
- Maple syrup: this is used to sweeten the chocolate spread and also contributes to its velvety, smooth and fudgy texture. Pure maple syrup adds a nice depth of flavour. Use 100% pure Grade A maple syrup (with no added sugar).
- Milk: I recommend using semi-skimmed (2%) milk for the best taste. You can use dairy or non-dairy milk, depending on preferences and dietary requirements.

This recipe has no added olive oil or coconut oil.
Variations and Substitutions
- Nut butter: tahini can be substituted with nut butters like peanut butter or hazelnut butter. Note - this will adjust the flavor profile of the spread.
- Sea salt: add a pinch of salt to enhance the sweetness.
- Vanilla: add a hint of vanilla extract for a vanilla flavor.
How to make Chocolate Tahini Spread
- Mix the wet ingredients together. Start by adding the tahini, milk and maple syrup into a medium bowl and using a spoon, mix together until combined.
- Sift in the cacao powder. Using a sieve, sift the cacao powder into the wet ingredients.
- Mix and fold. Using a spoon and silicone spatula, gently mix the cacao powder into the wet ingredients for a few minutes until combined. Use the silicone spatula to scrape and fold the cacao powder into the wet ingredients, including cacao powder from the sides of the bowl.
- Serve and enjoy. Once fully mixed you will get a smooth, creamy chocolate spread (as image 4) which you can serve and enjoy!
Tips for making the Best Tahini Chocolate Spread
- Tahini: stir the tahini before using and make sure it is runny before measuring. When measuring the tahini, pour into the cup measure. Tahini is typically runny however can often be solid towards the bottom of the container – this recipe calls for runny/ creamy tahini.
- Sift the cacao powder: it is important to sift the cacao powder into the wet ingredients – this prevents any lumps and helps make a smooth, velvety chocolate spread
- Maple syrup: adjust sweetness according to preference. For a sweeter chocolate spread add another ½ tablespoon maple syrup and stir to combine.
- Use a silicone/rubber spatula to mix ingredients: I highly recommend using a silicone or rubber spatula with the spoon to mix the cacao powder with the wet ingredients. This is because the cacao powder can often stick to the sides of the bowl and can be left unmixed. The silicone or rubber spatula helps you scrape off any powder from the sides of the bowls to fully incorporate the cacao powder into the wet ingredients, giving you a smooth and creamy chocolate spread. If you notice some cacao powder on the sides of the bowl, use your spatula to spread the wet ingredients over the sides of the bowl – this will help the ingredients fully mix together.
- Mix slowly after sifting in the cacao powder: this will help the cacao powder from messing your worktop!
